Inaugural Festival

During our Inaugural 2005 Festival we presented movies from China, India, Indonesia, Japan, and Taiwan. We will soon post our line-up of movies for the 2006 Festival.

AAFF 2005

Title: Balzac and The Little Chinese Seamstress (China)
Venue: Kennesaw State University


Theme: How the three teenagers create beauty and the beginnings of freedom through music and books, which transform into ideas. The tender beginnings of adulthood, both painful and exhilarating, are quietly observed.

Synopsis: Two teenagers considered "bourgeois intellectuals" by the system are sent to a small village in order to be 'reeducated' for contact with the population. In this sinister period where the majority of books are prohibited & weddings before the age of 25 are illegal, the will clandestinely discover literature & love at the same time.
Title: Virgin (Indonesia)
Venue: Kennesaw State University


Theme: Growing pains from teenagers to adulthood.

Synopsis: Biyan, who is a sixteen year old teenager, formed a close friendship with two other teenage girlfriends, Stella and Ketie. They explore the lust of teenage adulthood and tested the bond of their friendship. How does Biyan maintains its friendship with its two close friends?

Theme: Life of each individial representing age from birth to death.

Synopsis: NJ Jian, his wife Min-Min and their two kids are typical middle-class family, sharing their Taipei apartment with Min-Min's elderly mother. NJ is a partner in a computer hardware firm, which made big profits last year but will go bankrupt soon if it doesn't change direction. He warms to the idea of teaming up with Ota, an innovative designer of games software in Japan, and enjoys spending time with the charming and urbane Japanese man. What happens next forms the rest of the story?

Title: Shaapa (India)
Venue: Mercer University Atlanta


Awards: 4 Karnataka State Awards for Best Film, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography.

Theme: Human insecurities in life such as fears of rejection, negative thinking caused by bad parenting.

Synopsis: It is the story of Shekar who had a mentally and physically abused childhood and feared that there is a spell of curse on him, that every time he expresses his love he loses that person. When Shekar falls in love with a girl called Kaveri, his past memories prevent him from expressing his love for her. What Happens next forms the rest of the story?

Title: Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam
Venue: Georgia Perimeter College - Dunwoody


Theme: A film that seemed to do better than many had expected, but still created quite a stir in the local and international scene. It also got Malaysia on the Asian Film scene once again as Maya Karin won "Best Actress" at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival.

Synopsis: The prima donna Meriam (Maya Karin), a gamelan dancer is well known in the town of Paku Laris. Marsani (Azri Iskandar) and his close friend Danial (Sahronizam Noor) are among the many admirers who compete to win Meriam's heart. However Meriam chooses Danial for a husband instead of the more powerful and handsome Marsani. Pregnant with her first child, Meriam is found laying in a pool of blood. Strange happenings begin to occur and the villagers begin to accuse Meriam of having dabbled in black magic and has now returned as a Pontianak.

Title: La Visa Loca (Philippines)
Venue: Georgia Perimeter College - Dunwoody


Theme: The movie is more than just the story of heartbreaks at the American Embassy. With biting wit and humor, the film touches on many facets of contemporary Filipino culture- folk superstition, the media, action star mythology, the importance of family, among others.

Synopsis: Jess Huson (Robin Padilla) has a dream. Like many struggling Filipinos, he yearns for a better life for himself and his family by going to America. And like many struggling Filipinos, fate always denied Jess a U.S. visa.

Driven by desperation, Jess embarks on a comical adventure filled with lamebrain schemes and outrageous plans that end up in hilarious train wrecks that can happen only in the Philippines.

Will Jess make his dreams come true? Will he get a U.S. visa? Will he leave his father (Johnny Delgado) and the mother (Rufa Mae Quinto) of his child behind? Will he get to live the life he always wanted?

“La Visa Loca” is a hilarious comedy that nails the answer to the question: how far would Filipinos go just to get a U.S. visa?

Theme: SPIRITED AWAY is the tale of Chihiro, a young girl who is taken down an unusual road by her parents while moving to a new home in an unfamiliar town.

Sypnosis: Adapted from the Japanese original, director Hayao Miyazaki's adventure tale won the Best Animated Feature Oscar for its story of 10-year-old Chihiro (voiced by Rumi Hiragi). During her family's move to the suburbs, Chihiro wanders into a magical world where a witch rules -- and those who disobey her are turned into animals. When her parents are turned into pigs, Chihiro must find a way to help them return to their human form.
